Approximately three inches of fresh snow fell on Boone Saturday night, and with a freezing Super Bowl Sunday, not much of it went anywhere. However, the sun came out on Monday and began thawing the High Country, dripping icicles included.

Amidst a global pandemic, a school newspaper box sits outside App State's Student Recreation Center near King Street. Because of the pandemic, student journalists at The Appalachian have shifted the way they put out the news. Instead of weekly physical copies of the paper, an online PDF comes out each week. To check out their recent work, just scan a QR code at one of the empty boxes.

Since the pandemic started, more and more people have turned to video games, such as NBA 2k, to amuse themselves while cooped up inside. “Since playing real basketball isn’t safe right now because of COVID, I’ve been playing more 2k this season than really any other,”  avid basketball fan Jackson Rhodes said. “The game still sucks, but it’s still basketball, so it’s way better than nothing.”

After the trip of a lifetime to the 2021 NCAA Tournament to cover App State’s first tourney berth in 21 years, a reporters room’s floor remains littered with remnants of the trip. The Mountaineers fell in a thriller in the First Four, but the team still shattered expectations this unprecedented season, despite facing the adversity of COVID-19.

COVID Disc Golfers

It's no secret that the pandemic kept a lot of folks stuck inside, forcing many to find new ways to get outside while remaining socially-distant. For Drew Wilson, Walker Dixon and many others, disc golf was the answer.

"I'm what they've kind of coined a "covid golfer," or "corona golfer," where I kind of picked it up during the pandemic," Dixon said.

Wilson said his favorite aspect of disc golf is the fact that "nothing is ever the same on the course." He explained that in other sports, such as basketball or football, the dimensions are the same every single time. He said that challenge and curiosity of not knowing what to expect from each new disc golf course is one reason he can't get enough.

Hear more about the sport and the experiences it gives its participants in the video story at right.

AUDIO AGNOSTIC VIDEO

I produced this video recapping App State's strong showing at the 2021 Southern Conference wrestling championships. Wondering where the sound is? That's because it's meant to stand alone and tell the story visually without audio.
